Handmade Shopping List #12

This Handmade shopping list includes artists in all different mediums, so let's not forget the musician!

"Jazz Aviary" by up and coming vocal artist Susan Krebs is a delightful cd that celebrates birds and our ancient connection with the avian tribe. The lyrics are fun, and Susan's voice is just lovely.

"I remember as a kid, lying stretched out in a hammock between two grand
sycamores, watching the birds, listening to the birds - DIGGING THE BIRDS!
Birds and humans have shared this planet for many millennia. Our impulse to
sing and our desire to fly reflect this deep and ancient connection with the
avian tribe." - Susan

My favorite song is "Baltimore Oriole," and you can listen to it right here.

Here's something off-beat for that friend who has everything. This tiny cardinal family was hand felted by artist Debbie of Got Crow? Sculptures. Each little bird is made of sheep's wool and was carefully crafted completely freehand. Now that's talent!

Let's not forget to add charity to our list of handmade goodness. Heifer International is a fantastic organization dedicated to working with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. They do this by buying local animals and training families to raise them using environmentally sound agriculture practices. You can give a gift of baby chicks for only $20, and feed an entire family for a year.

Robert Kaufman Fabrics

Sorry about the delay in posts this week. Kevin and I moved into our house {finally}, and I have been printing a lot to get ready for the Fayetteville Arts Festival this Saturday.

I found this superb fabric last night and had to order some right away. The black and white bird theme is P-E-R-F-E-C-T for my new dining room. I already have those adorable bird decals from ferm LIVING, and this fabric will be the perfect finishing touch. Lovely!

Let there be Light

Kevin and I are almost done remodeling our house. Yay!! Our floors have been refinished and we're just waiting for the polyseal to dry. Once that's done, they'll put in the baseboards and we can FINALLY move in. It's only been almost a year.

Now that the main stuff (new walls, new floors, trim, etc.) is almost done, I'm having a lighting dilemmia. We have a lovely new fireplace, and a place for a sconce on each side. I can't decide if I want some ornate crystal affair, or a sleek modern look, or maybe this lovely little birdie from Circa Lighting. You can see some pictures of our remodeling here. Any suggestions??

Thumbtacks + Ribbons

How About Orange has a fantastic tutorial for making fabric covered thumbtacks. I'm thinking about using this vintage ribbon from Reprodepot for mine. The little pink birds are super cute! I have a large inspiration bulletin board, and it would be nice to use something other than plain brass tacks to hold up all my pretty pictures.

Happy 4th!

John James Audubon was an ornithologist and painter best known for cataloging the birds of North America. Each of his paintings depicts the bird set true-to-life in its natural habitat. He published several books of his works, including Birds of North America, which is often regarded as the greatest picture book ever published. Christie's sold a copy in 2000 for $8.8 million and set a world record for most expensive printed book.

The National Audubon society was incorporated in 1905 and named in his honor. Today, on this most patriotic of days, we are celebrating the Bald Eagle.

Freshcut fabrics

A few months ago I came across an adorable little doll blanket on Flickr. I followed a few links to find out what genius had created this precious thing, and discovered my new favorite fabric line, Freshcut, by Heather Bailey.

If you like fabrics, you should definitely take a peek. Her patterns are so beautiful, it would be impossible to pick a favorite. For those of you who have used Freshcut fabrics, please post a comment and tell us all about it. Oh, and if anyone wants to make me a purse out of this one, I would be much obliged!

paper rock scissors

How many pairs of scissors do you own? I'm a firm believer that you can never have too much cutting power. On any given day I own between 2-8 pairs. (The fluctuation is a direct result of my lazy unwillingness to ever put anything back where it goes. ) Perhaps I would take better care of my scissor collection if it was made up of these quirky yet cute bird cutters from Neiman Marcus. The handles are magnetic, so I don't think I could lose them even if I tried.

Ivy league

I was wondering through the Teleflora website, trying to find myself a little treat, when I came across this splendid ivy basket. Look at that cute little bird's nest! Do we all want this? of course! Husbands and boyfriends, take note.

Now Seeking Sponsors

I tried adding google adsense to my blog this morning, but the pictures were terrifying and not at all lovely. So, I decided it would be better to allow my readers to become sponsors and submit their own beautiful ads. In honor of this new endeavor, the first 5 readers that respond to this post will be given free advertising for two weeks. Yay!! All you have to do is leave a comment. I will email you the information and you can get your image to me as soon as you want. I would really like it if your ad had a bird in it somewhere, but it doesn't have to.

Update: I have five people, but only 3 ads so far. I you weren't one of the first five, but you email me an ad before they do, I will put up your ad until I get all the others in. And I might rotate you in from time to time.

my email address is in my profile!!

Bird of the Week

On Saturday, Kevin and I were out estate-selling when we noticed this very unusual bird. It was black except for some bright neon orange patches on the wings. I had never seen a bird like that, so of course I drifted into the other lane while craning my head to follow it. Luckily, Kevin yelled at me before there was an accident. Moral of the story: I don't know! I just wanted to give a little background on the Bird of the Week.

If you guys ever see any unusual birds and want to submit them just leave a comment or email me.
